In the GDR, folk art was a segment of the ideologically defined and financially supported "mass culture". Officially, it was called folk art, amateur art and artistic folk creation. This included activities in circles of visual and applied arts, in choirs, music, dance and theatre groups, in circles of writing workers and in singing clubs. These were often supervised by academically trained artists and produced considerable artistic potential. The special exhibition provides a comprehensive overview of the artists and artistic works in the Sorbian field as well as an insight into the intensive promotion of folk art in the GDR.
