Building / plot situation

The meeting centre found its home at the resettlement site of Forst-Eulo in the newly built or rebuilt church in the new district of Horno. It was opened on 14 October 2006. The exhibition is housed in the church rooms on the upper floor. It is called: "Lost homeland. Mining and its effects on churches and parishes in Upper and Lower Lusatia".

Characteristics

The presentation provides an insight into mining-related settlement in Lower and Upper Lusatia between 1924 - the beginning of the first comprehensive relocation - and today from the perspective of the disappeared churches and their congregations. In earlier decades, the future landscape was not considered when coal was mined, production quantities counted and environmental issues were hardly taken into account. The fate of the inhabitants or the parishes was marked by economic constraints and insufficient compensation. The theme is illustrated with 27 models of mined churches, 4 film stations with short films on the parishes in which those affected describe their backgrounds and fates (themes: history, last services, conversion, etc.): Historical, last services, reburials, whereabouts of church property, resettlement practice, church replacement construction, church relocations, saved congregations, threatened places), 18 maps of areas that no longer exist today as well as original exhibits of destroyed churches.

Special exhibitions/ accompanying offers

  • 2 research stations allow for a detailed examination of the circumstances surrounding the resettlements using documents, photos, chronicles and films collected in archives or provided by contemporary witnesses.
  • 40 drawers hold plans and photographic material on the churches and church property
  • 20 reading stations with visual material and documents on the churches and historical finds

Offers for children - With Kobi to the museum

Kobi - the little house ghost - is at home in the museum. He lives there in a slipper under the stove. At midnight, he eavesdrops on the old museum pieces when they tell stories about the past. He tells these exciting stories to the museum staff, who then pass them on to the children - stories from the old, old days.

Kobi offers:

"Lost home " in the roof truss of the church - memories of destroyed churches

In earlier decades, the future landscape was not considered when mining coal. Extraction rates counted and environmental issues were hardly taken into account. The fate of the inhabitants and church communities was marked by economic constraints and insufficient compensation. The theme is illustrated with 27 models of mined churches, 4 film stations with short films about the communities in which those affected describe their backgrounds and fates, 18 maps of areas that no longer exist, and original exhibits of destroyed churches. Historical facts, last services, reburials, whereabouts of church property, resettlement practices, church replacement construction, church relocations, saved congregations, threatened places are documented for posterity.
