The special exhibition looks at the history of Advent calendars in Europe and especially in Germany. Advent calendars are tools devised by adults for children to make the remaining time until Christmas Eve more vivid and to fuel anticipation. They certainly go back much further into the past than archival evidence suggests. Printed Advent calendars were and are always an expression of contemporary art in their artistic design, regardless of whether they are Advent calendars to be put up, hung up, cut out, torn off or stuck on, whether windows can be opened or cover sheets broken out, whether they are one-dimensional or three-dimensional, whether figures can be added or only the pictures or texts can be looked at.
