The night watchman's working day begins at sunset. Equipped with a lantern, horn and night watchman's pike, he checks the town gates and front doors and keeps an eye out for thieves and fires. In the process, he learns a lot about life in the town. He knows every craftsman, market woman, merchant and journeyman and their work inside out.
