The building history is documented since the 11th century. The lower part of the large main tower with its walls up to four metres thick is the oldest part of the castle complex.<\/p>\n<h3>Characteristics<\/h3>\n<p>The Niederlausitzer Heidemuseum, the district museum of the Spree-Nei\u00dfe district, looks at the heath landscape in the south-east of Brandenburg with its exhibitions. Founded on 9 December 1911 as a town museum, it was housed in changing domiciles and moved to the castle for the second time in 1997.<\/p>\n<p>The following permanent exhibitions and collections are part of its profile:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\"><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Regional castle and museum history<\/li>\n<li>Folklore - regional settlement history, Sorbian customs<\/li>\n<li>Industrial history<\/li>\n<li>Natural history<\/li>\n<li>Life and work of the Spremberg-born writer Erwin Strittmatter<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The relationship between man, nature and culture plays an important role in the region, which was shaped by lignite mining. The open-air complex built next to the castle provides an insight into the rural way of life of the farmers of Lower Lusatia. The rural farmstead consists of a residential stable house, a barn with shed (both relocated - <em>Replicas<\/em>), a draw well, a dovecote, a bee house and a bakehouse. With its interior furnishings and the associated tools, the farmhouse, which is over 200 years old, illustrates the rural way of life and living in the heath villages around 1900. He lives there in a slipper under the stove. At midnight, he eavesdrops on the old museum pieces when they tell stories about the past.
