District Museum in the Cultural Palace of the Spree-Neiße District
Building / plot situation
Spremberg Castle, which houses the museum, has developed over various construction stages from a Romanesque castle to a late Baroque four-wing complex. The building history is documented since the 11th century. The lower part of the large main tower with its walls up to four metres thick is the oldest part of the castle complex.
Characteristics
The Niederlausitzer Heidemuseum, the district museum of the Spree-Neiße district, looks at the heath landscape in the south-east of Brandenburg with its exhibitions. Founded on 9 December 1911 as a town museum, it was housed in changing domiciles and moved to the castle for the second time in 1997.
The following permanent exhibitions and collections are part of its profile:
- Regional castle and museum history
- Folklore - regional settlement history, Sorbian customs
- Industrial history
- Natural history
- Life and work of the Spremberg-born writer Erwin Strittmatter
The relationship between man, nature and culture plays an important role in the region, which was shaped by lignite mining. The open-air complex built next to the castle provides an insight into the rural way of life of the farmers of Lower Lusatia. The rural farmstead consists of a residential stable house, a barn with shed (both relocated - Replicas), a draw well, a dovecote, a bee house and a bakehouse. With its interior furnishings and the associated tools, the farmhouse, which is over 200 years old, illustrates the rural way of life and living in the heath villages around 1900. The lapidarium provides information about stone witnesses of Lower Lusatia.

Offers for children - With Kobi to the museum
Kobi - the little house ghost - is at home in the museum. He lives there in a slipper under the stove. At midnight, he eavesdrops on the old museum pieces when they tell stories about the past. He tells these exciting stories to the museum staff, who then pass them on to the children - stories from the old, old days.
Kobi offers:
1. life in the past and today
We will compare a day as experienced by the great-grandparents with today. There will be insights into the food storage of that time, the nutrition, procurement and preservation.
A short film shows historical crafts. History thus becomes an exciting experience.
Afterwards, we "examine" various pieces of equipment and try out some of them.
The programme takes place indoors and outdoors and is aimed at pupils in grades 1 to 6.
Group size: 5 to 20 people
Dates: by arrangement
Pre-registration: 5 days before at the latest
Duration: approx. 1.5 hours

2. lock play
The castle game is a search and orientation game of the museum. Dressed up in medieval costumes, we go in search of previously photographed exhibits. If all of them are found, including an old key, then we can use it to open the treasure chest. There is brief information about the objects found. In this way, all areas of the house are illuminated and the purpose of a museum is explained.
Different tasks have to be solved according to the age of the participants.

The knowledge about the cultivation and use of herbs is thousands of years old. It is fun to sniff the herbs, to identify them or to snack on them. But be careful! Not all of them are edible and need to be refined. Afterwards, you can enjoy a snack with homemade butter and herbal salt. A guided tour of the herb garden with colleagues from the Turmapotheke Spremberg is available on request.
