Museum of technology and local history - ironworks and fish farm
Building/property situation
Margrave Johann V had the former Peitz ironworks and hammer mill built around 1550. The basis for the construction of the works was the local grass ironstone, which was smelted in the blast furnace until around 1856. The pig iron produced was used to make cannon barrels, cannonballs, utensils, household items and even bells. Today's Ironworks and Fisheries Museum houses the oldest preserved foundry plant in Germany. The plant dates from the first half of the 19th century and is partially functional.
Characteristics
The historic blast furnace hall from 1810 is the centrepiece of the museum. It embodies the technological status of the early industrial iron foundry of the 19th century. The special attraction of the show facility lies in its preservation as a structural and technical monument to the greatest possible extent. The right wing of the blast furnace building houses the permanent exhibition "The Peitz Ironworks - Rise and Decline of an Industrial Location".
The fishing museum is located in the left wing. Numerous exhibits and displays convey a lot of interesting information about the history and tradition of fishing, the Peitz pond industry and regional inland fishing.
The museum also houses an impressive collection of minerals and an informative exhibition on the subject of water in the turbine house at the museum.
