Senftenberg Castle and Fortress / Grod a twardnica Zły Komorow

castle_senftenberg

Conquer Saxony's fortress in Brandenburg!

Building / plot situation

The impressive castle and fortress complex was built in the 16th century to secure the Saxon border on the foundations of a medieval castle. Today, it is Germany's only preserved fortification surrounded by such a mighty earthen wall. On the tour of the fortress you will discover secret passages, the powder tower and a cleverly planned fortress portal that could not be taken so easily.

Characteristics

For more than 100 years, the castle has been home to a museum whose modern exhibitions invite visitors on an extraordinary journey into the region. From the splendour of Saxon days in today's Brandenburg and the heyday of the fortress, the mining traditions of Lusatia or the history of a small town to modern art, there is much to discover. Among the exhibits are Senftenberg's oldest fire brigade, a Sorbian farmhouse parlour, precious church inventory and the largest wine press in the region.
The most unusual place in Senftenberg Castle leads "underground" to the show mine. Here you can immerse yourself in the early days of mining in Lusatia, when the first coal mines went into operation and farmers became miners.

History of the Guben Clothiers and the Former Man-Made Fibre Factory

Building / plot situation

Right next to the City and Industry Museum, in the other wing of the listed factory building, is the exhibition on the history of the Guben clothiers and the former chemical fibre factory.

Characteristics

Thanks to the commitment of the members of the "Gubener Tuche und Chemiefasern e.V." association and with the support of the city of Guben, a museum gem has been created. The exhibition embodies important traditions of Guben's economic development.

Here you can learn interesting facts about the history of the cloth-making trade in Guben from the 11th/12th century until its decline in 1997. Among the exhibits, for example, is a sample collection of cloth from 1873 to 1990. The exhibition offers industrial history at your fingertips.

Special exhibitions / accompanying offers

The active development work of the association "Gubener Tuche und Chemiefasern e.V." continuously opens up innovations to the exhibition, which are presented to visitors in special exhibitions, among other things. Special events and anniversaries with thematically coordinated programmes are highlights of the museum's activities, as are the meetings of former textile workers and man-made fibre workers.

Offers for children - With Kobi to the museum

Kobi - the little house ghost - is at home in the museum. He lives there in a slipper under the stove. At midnight, he eavesdrops on the old museum pieces when they tell stories about the past. He tells these exciting stories to the museum staff, who then pass them on to the children - stories from the old, old days.

Kobi offer:

Museum rally (getting to know the museum in a playful way)

A museum rally is designed to make a visit to the Guben Cloth and Man-Made Fibres exhibition a special experience for children and young people. After an insight into the history of the Guben clothiers and the former man-made fibre factory, the pupils are given questionnaires and can now explore the exhibition independently. Through an attentive visit, all questions can be solved and the sustainability of the visit is promoted.
Afterwards, the questionnaires will be evaluated together with the museum staff and a small "award ceremony" will follow (prizes and certificates will be provided by the museum). Afterwards, there will be a small photo shoot with coats made from Guben wool. The CFG's means of transport, the lizard, is also gladly used for a nice photo.

The offer takes place indoors and is aimed at pupils in grades 5 to 7.
Dates: by arrangement
Pre-registration: at least 2 weeks in advance
Duration: approx. 1.5 to 2 hours

Lower Lusatia Regional Museum of Sorbian / Wendish History and Culture

Building / plot situation

Since 1994, the Wendish Museum has been located in a classicist former residential and commercial building in Cottbus' old town, not far from the Altmarkt. The building was completely renovated and the entire exhibition space was renewed. There is a new service area for visitor reception with cloakroom and lockers. A newly designed reception room with an introductory film to the exhibition was created. The permanent exhibition on the first floor was designed as a closed tour. The museum has a charming little courtyard with a traditional "Sorbian lime tree". The forecourt was designed in 2005 with a bronze sculpture by Peter Buth depicting the water sprite sitting on an erratic block, a Sorbian/Wendish mythical figure.

Characteristics

The exhibition features a new, high-quality design and colour concept, individual room design, new media offerings that allow visitors to experience the Lower Sorbian language. The exhibition of the Wendish Museum provides insights into prehistory and early history and also deals with the topics of Sorbian / Wendish folk art, visual arts, language, writing, literature, music, folk costumes, way of life and customs, Wendish coins and medals as well as the postal history of the Sorbs. The visitor learns that the autochthonous Slavs of Germany originally inhabited an area whose westernmost foothills stretched from Schleswig-Holstein in the north to Upper Franconia in the south of the country, and that the Wendish share in German history and folk development is greater than is often assumed and is by no means limited to Lusatia.

Special exhibitions / accompanying offers

Changing special exhibitions deal with historical, literary, folkloristic and artistic topics. The exhibitions are bilingual (German-Lower Sorbian / Wendish). Several times a year, there are events to accompany the exhibitions, concerts, readings, Wendish discussion groups (Serbske blido) and traditional events.
Guided tours are offered in German as well as in both Sorbian (Wendish) languages.

Teaching and preserving customs and language

Building / plot situation

The museum is located in the historic centre of the village, right next to the towerless neoclassical village church. Most of the exhibition is located in the rooms of the school building, which was built in 1875. The old parish barn has been converted into another museum building in keeping with its listed status. In the neighbouring stables, which, like the barn, date back to the first half of the 19th century, there are four further exhibition rooms. These give visitors an insight into everyday farming activities such as washing, churning butter, stockpiling and flax processing.

Characteristics

The Wendish-German museum of local history is located in the centre of the village. The exhibition is dedicated to the rural life of the Wendish and German population. The history of the village is brought to life with the help of farm furniture and domestic utensils. Small-scale farming technology and tools of the trade are on display. Of course, history is also illustrated here with photos, documents and certificates. The exhibits are shown as a display collection on 560 square metres. Another museum object is the parish barn opposite, which has been renovated in recent years in keeping with its listed status. The parish barn houses a gem of the local history museum: one of the last remaining funeral carriages in the region. There is also a fully functional loom. A collection of ceramics includes household vessels and artefacts from the last 300 years. The museum is consistently labelled bilingually in Wendish and German. The traditional Jänschwald costume is presented in all its facets. The museum has made a great contribution to the Jänschwald Christ Child, the "Janšojski bog". This figure is part of a regional pre-Christmas custom that has only survived to the present day in the municipality of Jänschwalde.
The museum also offers a digital experience: With the help of 360° VR glasses, you can immerse yourself in the documentary film "From flax stalk to linen wall" and go right into the middle of flax processing 100 years ago.

Special exhibitions / accompanying offers

Changing special exhibitions

  • Thematic tours for school classes and tour groups are part of the programme.
  • The Jänschwald Christ Child is a much sought-after tradition and is also out and about in neighbouring communities at Christmas time.

Agricultural technology and the rural way of life

Building / plot situation

The exhibition can be experienced in the rooms of a mill building erected at the beginning of the 20th century, the electrically operated successor to the former trestle windmill at the same location. The red brick building complex - in the arrangement a closed four-sided courtyard - has been completely renovated on the "outer shell" (roof / façade / windows) in recent years.

Characteristics

The exhibition activities of the association "Traditionelle Landtechnik und bäuerliche Lebensart Proschim e.V." (Traditional Agricultural Technology and Rural Way of Life Proschim) focus on regional folklore. In the exhibition rooms of the mill, visitors can see an exhibition of rural furniture, domestic tools, small-scale agricultural technology and village crafts. The collection of historical agricultural technology is of particular importance beyond the region. In the exhibition, reference is made to the Sorbian / Wendish roots through bilingual labelling. The mill technology, which is still partly preserved on site, is included in the presentation.

Special exhibitions / accompanying offers

An annual special exhibition is held at the village festival.
The exhibition is regularly rearranged, for example to show newly acquired exhibits.

  • Action days with demonstrations of agricultural technology, historical household appliances, food processing and much more.
  • The exhibition and event concept of the association also includes the inclusion of particularly original properties; on special occasions, such as the "Landpartie", the "German Mill Day", village festivals and other festive days, the objects are open and the private properties together with collection items are presented as an "open farm".
  •  On request, museum educational programmes and lectures on a wide range of topics are held for schoolchildren as well as in the context of rural adult education.
